Abstract：According to the fundamental conception and characteristics of international metropolis, this paper analyzed the conditions of developing international metropolis in the coastal area of China.The comprehensive evaluation method of many factors was used to evaluate the comprehensive actual strength for the major cities in this area.The order of the cites to develop International Metropolis was given in their score.On the basis of this, it was pointed out that Shanghai and Bdijing will be the first step to develop International Metropolis at the beginning of the next century.But they must have different function.Shanghai will be the comprehensive International Metropolis while Beijing only be the specific International Metropolis for politic and culture.Beijing must also have cooperation with Tianjin to improve its economic strength.Although Shenzhen and Guangzhou have high level of modernization and internationalization, they have little possibility to develop International Metropolis independently, they must develop supplementary with Hong Kong's International Metropolis development.Besides, the problems and major limiting factors for China to develop Interantional Metropolis were pointed out and the counter measures were given.
